Because of the newspaper approach to the Zodiac, some people have the impression that astrology is about forecasting your future. Fortune-telling Astrologers have emphasized prediction of the future because most of us would like to know what’s coming up for us, and if what’s plaguing us now will end soon, when to plant, how to read the internal weather. Astrology can certainly be used for such questions—being an oracle like the I Ching.

However, the art of Astrology, in my opinion, is a gift to humanity rather like the famous Operations Manual (we didn’t receive) about how to live here and why we’re living here. In other words Astrology doesn’t just predict what a marriage will be like in five years; the tool presents the emotions and growth underlying the union. It offers personal reasons for joining together, as well as connection to the soil (planting, etc).

The question changes from Should Mary & Tom live together? to How will Mary grow and how will Tom grow by following their urges to unite? Other questions naturally follow. What is the major life issue for each of them? What are other personality problems each needs to solve to make the progress each would like? How would the mate challenge or facilitate those issues in the other? Where should they live?

Astrology can even help us know how we’ve responded to similar questions and situations in the past. By linking together the astronomical passing of Pluto in the sky to an explosive event, or Jupiter to a broken hip because of the moment of occurrence, we can determine what energies are held inside us with a good deal of confidence of accuracy. We can actually unveil the secrets of the mind and emotions, rather than just wonder what’s really going on? It’s like having an Edgar Cayce personally explaining our dreams and daily encounters so that our contact with nature, for example, becomes quite deep.

Astrology helps us connect the dots. Falling from the roof and breaking your hip can be a pain. So can having your partner leave you when you just got released from the hospital and are hobbling on crutches. When this happened to me I consulted Astrology to learn that Jupiter’s energies correspond to the hip, and that it had been in a position that only occurs a couple times in adulthood. As I sought to understand the reasons for breaking my hip, I discovered that Jupiter in the sky was passing through the location of marriage and relationship. I had broken more than my hip with my behaviors and the attitudes I held. Astrology concretely connected the hip, the marriage, and my attitudes—which I then had further tools for understanding.

These tools then help us join more easily with our whatever   making up our environment.
